Good Body Scrubs: Exfoliation Isn’t Just For Your Face

When it comes down to your face, you probably have a skincare regimen all planned out. This might include washing, toning, moisturizing, and exfoliating to give your face a youthful glow. It’s also very likely that this quality skincare doesn’t go beyond your neck. You may not know it, but a good body scrub can make a big difference in how you look and feel.

Exfoliants are one of the simplest forms of care you can give to your whole body, and they’re very easy to use. If you haven’t been exfoliating below your neck, here’s why you should start giving your whole body that special care.

 

Why You Should Exfoliate Your Whole Body

Your skin has a natural cycle of renewal that repeats itself about every 4 weeks. In this cycle your skin creates new skin cells to replace old ones, and pushes the old dead cells out. Exfoliating helps with this process by helping to scrub off dead skin cells still clinging to your body.

Exfoliating helps prevent body acne by reducing blockages of the pours, boosts blood flow to the skin, and helps relieve stress. The result is that you will look better, and feel better also. Without regular exfoliation, your skin can end up rough, especially on your elbows, knees, and feet.

 

A good body scrub can help with many common skin issues, including razor burn (although you should be careful with exfoliating after a shave) dark spots, and even ingrown hairs.

Selecting the best body exfoliator

Not all scrubs are created equal. The best exfoliator for your body is a natural one, ideally one that uses mechanical action to remove dead skin and debris. Most body scrubs contain sugars or salts for friction, and these both work well to revitalize your skin.

It’s also important to check whether or not the product uses natural exfoliants, or plastic “micro beads” to exfoliate your skin. Natural scrubs are better for the environment and also for your plumbing. Plastic beads don’t degrade for long periods of time, and that means building up in your septic tank, or in the oceans.

After this, what type of body scrub you choose depends on your skin. If you’ve recently shaved, it’s better to avoid salts or chemicals until the area has had time to recover. These can irritate small nicks and cuts from shaving, and be painful rather than rejuvenating.

If your skin is very sensitive, avoid crushed nuts and salts so that the abrasions are not too much for you. Instead, choose a sugar scrub which tends to be less abrasive.

A good scrub is an essential for your skin from head to toe. If you’re taking care of your face and ignoring the rest of your body, grabbing a high quality exfoliator is a great way to start making positive changes in your routine. Your skin will thank you, and using a body scrub may well become your favorite part of your skin routine.
